Airstrip Midway (the Island) to Close

The US government wants to shut the airfield at Midway Island in the mid-Pacific. Big deal, you’re probably thinking. That’s certainly what I was thinking. But as the NY Times article (above) points out, it may have more of an effect than you think. Because of safety regulations, 2- and 3-engine aircraft will have to fly a different route from Asia due to the closure, adding 90 minutes to flights and about $4,000 worth of fuel. And Continental would likely be forced to cancel its upcoming nonstop service from Nagoya, Japan, to Honolulu. Worth a read…
