South America’s LAN and TAM to Merge into LATAM

South American airlines LAN and TAM have announced that they will merge into a South American supercarrier called LATAM (clever).  LAN is part of Oneworld and TAM is part of the Star Alliance, so one of those alliances will lose a very significant piece of South American coverage when this is completed (view a very thorough overview of who will lose coverage here).  Basically one of the groups will lose very significant coverage in Chile, Peru, Argentina and Brazil.  And since LAN’s subsidiaries across the continent are included in the deal, there alliance that loses out here doesn’t have many other airlines to turn to to make up for it (Avianca, maybe?)
