Shocker! PeoplExpress Postpones Launch to Mid 2013 (Or Never…Does Never Work for You?)

PeoplExpress, the Newport News-based airline which shares its name with the much maligned lowfare carrier from the 1980s (which is like naming a car after the Ford Pinto and wondering why no one is buying it), said that it will push back its expected launch date from this year to the middle of 2013.

A spokesperson said that there are two issues holding back the new airline from launching. First, it needs to raise additional funds to meet Department of Transportation requirements. Second, it is re-evaluating its route structure (perhaps because they cannot build a business on flights from Newport News to Pittsburgh, as they had earlier suggested).

May I add here: don’t hold your breath for this thing launching.

Can’t say I’m surprised, though to be honest I was intrigued enough to try them (once). Honestly Newport News to Pittsburgh is a route I’d be interested in, even if there understandably aren’t enough other people to make the route/network profitable.
