Mauritanian Plane Hijacked

An Air Mauritania 737 was hijacked yesterday, with the hijacker demanding to be flown to France.  Instead, the plane made a stop in the Western Sahara, then continued on to the Canary Islands.  Upon landing in the Canaries, the pilot landed hard, knocking the hijacker off his feet, allowing passengers to overpower him.  The hijacking may be tied to an Al Qaeda call to attack the Mauritanian government for recognizing Israel.

2 odd things in the article. The writer mentions that two shots were fired, but later says that the guns may have been fake. Also, the article says that the hijacker was overpowered by passengers, but later said that the hijacker gave himself up. When a bunch of people are piled up on top of you, I guess giving yourself up is probably the best option.
Maybe these are just discrpancies in what the Mauritanian and Spanish governments reported.

1) You are a sleuth, Enclyclopedia Brown.

2) My Mauritanian-Spanish dictionary is lost, so I can't help.

3) There's a Mauritanian government?

CBS news reported that the pilot figured out that the guy didnt' speak French and made an announcement that he would be making a hard landing, followed by a quick acceleration. At that point, in the landing, he was knocked over, boiling water was thrown on him and he was tackled by passengers.

After 9/11, it's going to be tough to hijack a plane, gun or not.

Planes are still hijacked more often than you think. I've noted 2 here in the past month or so (the Mauritania flight, and one in Botswana). Americans are far more hysterical over the issues brought up by 9/11 than most of the rest of the world. That's a good thing when it comes to hijackings, a bad thing when it comes to shutting down the city of Boston because someone left a Lite Brite in the street.
