Helicopter Flights to New York Airports on Sale

US Helicopter, the company that flies passengers from Manhattan to JFK and Newark airports, is now offering trips for $99 each way through the end of October (normal fares are $159/$169 each way).  A cab to Newark with tax, tip and tolls will run you $60, and a car service runs about $20 more, so this is a legitimate alternative -- plus it only takes 8 minutes or so (once you schlepp your butt down to lower Manhattan).

JetBlue: Book a Flight, We'll Give You $50

JetBlue wants to give you some money.  Sort of.

What they really want to do is to get you to fly during the slow September and October season, so they're giving $50 vouchers when you buy a roundtrip ticket between now and September 18th for travel through October 14th.  You can use the vouchers for travel between December 1st and February 13th, except for Christmas and New Year's.  Can't complain about $50.

American's Crazy Cheap Fares to Central America

Since Spirit has invaded American's south Florida turf, AA has launched a number of fare sales designed to annoy them.  They announced another yesterday, including these fares:

Fort Lauderdale or Miami to:

Nassau, Bahamas: $34
Port-Au-Prince, Haiti: $69
San Pedro Sula, Honduras: $59
Managua, Nicaragua & San Jose, Costa Rica: $69

Fares are good midweek through December (for the most part).

To be fare, Spirit has low fares in this range quite frequently, but they don't offer the far superior schedule American has (nor does American have 2 1/2 hour red eyes from Central America -- I'm certain you really don't want to leave Managua at 1am to arrive in Miami 2.5 hours later.)

$799 Package to China

Via Frommers:

SmarTours has a great deal on a 10 day package to China.  $799 gets you a flight from San Francisco to Beijing, 5 nights hotel in Beijing, a flight to Shanghai, and 4 nights hotel in Shanghai.  You can fly from New York for an extra $100.  I'd say that's a bargain.  Prices are good for select trips November through February.  Given the price of airfare alone, you basically get 9 hotel nights and an internal flight for $100.  Nice.!

Great Fares to Latin America

American Airlines has launched a real live fare sale (not one of those so-called fare sales where the fares aren't any better than usual) between south Florida and Latin American and/or the Caribbean.  How cheap?

Miami - San Pedro Sula, Honduras is $49 each way
to Nicaragua?  $59
Guatemala? $69
Costa Rica? $69

Whew, they sure are annoyed with Spirit.

Fares are good through early December, with regular Thanksgiving blackout dates.  Oh, and you need a 3 day stay.

Air Tahiti Nui is offering a $575 round trip fare from Los Angeles to Paris for fall and winter travel.  The impressive part is that it's also good during Christmas/New Year's week.  Bon Voyage!

Zoom Airlines launches service today between New York (JFK) and London Gatwick, and fares are quite cheap.  They seem to start at about $77 to London and $199 back -- about $435 including all taxes for summer travel.  That's about half what others are charging.  Premium Economy fares (about 36" of legroom) are in the $825 range.  Be careful when you book, though, as flights stop in Bermuda a couple of days a week.

Delta's Business Class Sale to Europe

Delta has a launched a great business class sale to Europe, with fares that only about twice as much as the cheapest coach seats (frequently business class fares to Europe can run up to 20 times a coach ticket).  One-way ares from New York to Brussels start at $789 each way, Manchester (UK) $779, and Madrid ($989).  Given that coach fares to Europe are nuts this summer, this is a good alternative (as is Silverjet's ongoing Freequent Flyer promotion, where you  can get a round trip business class ticket to London for about $1000).

A Frequent Flyer Loophole

If you've tried to book a ticket using miles lately, you've probably been pretty frustrated by the lack of seats available.  At least I have, and that's all that matters to me.  It's always about me.  Anyway, this article shows a handy little trick to get around some of the restrictions on seat availability.  It works like this:  Say you want to go from New York to Houston using miles.  Reward seats aren't available on the days you want to go, so you book any dates.  You show up at the airport on the day you want to fly and you stand by on the flight you want.  Assuming there are any seats available (not just reward seats), they'll put you on it for a small fee (usually about $50).  Voila, you get on the flight you want using miles and $50.  Not too shabby.  The drawback?  If it's a busy time and there are no seats available, you're out o' luck.  But if it's not a busy travel time, it's a great deal.

$19 Fares Within Hawaii

It's getting nasty in Hawaii:  New carrier Go! is pissing off Hawaiian and Aloha by dropping fares on some routes to $19 each way (book by June 9th for travel by July 9th).  Aloha is so annoyed they're refusing to match, which is understandable because even the chief of Go! said he can't make money even at $39 each way.  It's gonna get ugly.

Spirit Airlines Low Business Class Fares

Spirit Airlines has a sale on their business class fares and they're extremely reasonable:  New York to LA is about $500 round trip (even cheaper midweek), while New York to Florida is about $350 round trip (again, cheaper midweek).  Spirit's business class is roughly on par with domestic business class on the larger carriers, so this really is a steal.  (though let me note that, at least right now, if you go to Spirit's homepage, you'll see an ad that shows a woman lying next to a man and she's saying, "loved those extra 6 inches."  I'm at least as rude and immature as the next guy---probably more---but I mean, come on.)

As part of its 25th anniversary, American Airlines is giving a special offer a day for 25 days.  Most of these offers are pretty weak.  However, there's one solid deal:  25% off award travel within the US, to Hawaii or to the Caribbean & Mexico.  Book by May 31st and travel August 22-November 8.  That means most Caribbean travel is only 18,750 miles, while a free flight to Hawaii in coach is just 26,250 miles.  Hurry, because the capacity controlled awards will go quickly (especially to Hawaii).

$33 Business Class Ticket from Toronto to Larnaca, Cyprus

You may remember that Travelocity gave away a bunch of tickets from LA to Fiji after it mistakenly posted a $0 fare on its website.  Well, there was a similar glitch yesterday (thanks to Flyertalk for all of this):  Orbitz, Cheaptickets (and others) had a $33 round trip fare from Toronto to Larnaca, Cyprus, in business class on Alitalia.  Yes, business class.  Lots of people jumped on this (my wife, who is about 14 months pregnant, wouldn't let me buy a ticket).  By the end of the day, Orbitz (and/or Alitalia) had cancelled many of the reservations.  But not all.  It's a fun read some of the (as of now) more than 1200 posts on the topic.  I'll let you know if Orbitz cancels all of the reservations, because then there's going to be a lot of crying over at Flyertalk.

Farecompare.com: A Great New Tool for Fare Search

Air Canada Flight Pass

Air Canada has introduced a variety of passes (only available to Canadians, so choose the Air Canada Canadian site for details) that offer a set number of flights for a discounted price.  Today, the airline has announced the Spring Sample Pass, which offers flight passes for as low as CDN$99 (US$85) per flight.

Air Canada has introduced some pretty innovative fare concepts in the past couple of years, including a major overhaul of its regular pricing to offer only a handful of fares on each flight.  However, in both that initiative and in this pass program, they have made the restrictions somewhat complicated.  By "somewhat" I mean "extremely."  (For extra credit, explain the difference between the 5 fare classes, paying special attention to the differences between "Latitude" class and "Tango Plus."  See here for the details.)

Basically, the $99-per-flight pass is available for flights within Western Canada on 4 offpeak days per week.  Other passes allow you to fly within or between other regions either 4 days a week or 7 days a week (all of this is explained at aircanada.com.  There are some restrictions on earning frequent flyer points, but the restrictions are so long that I can't be bothered to figure them out.

That all said, most of the passes are a pretty good deal, but pay attention to the fine print.  Even so, I applaud their innovative thinking.
